Don’t hesitate to act if your water system sends out an early warning signal

Drops in pressure can be a sign of an impending problem. As well pumps start to grow old it is not unusual for the pressure to start dropping, or for the pump to run longer and longer to achieve the right pressure. This can lead to a plugged up/ruined water treatment system. Act quickly in cases of pressure drop. The pump may be easy to get to in the Summer but impossible to access in the Winter. Always make sure that you know where the well is, and that you have a plan in case you need to replace your pump tomorrow. Act quickly and enjoy your great water

Carbon cartridges are a good choice for Taste and Odor. They can also remove large amounts of Chlorine from city water. It is common to see a Carbon Filter on most Refrigerator ice/water dispensers. They should be replaced at least every 6 months. Remember that Carbon is a natural breeding ground for bacteria. So, change your cartridges frequently and enjoy your great water.

There a lot of Cartridges to choose from. For removal of Ferric Iron we recommend a 5 micron Pleated Paper or Poly Spun type Cartridge. The idea is to get as much surface area as possible for the Iron to stick to. Filter Housings come in many sizes. It is best to choose a Cartridge Filter Housing that is large enough to handle the job without having to change Cartridges more than once a month. Carbon filters can remove iron and reduce odor. However Carbon is more expensive than Sediment Cartridges, and will plug quicker. I will continue with more on Cartridge filters later this week.

Shake Your Brine

Occasionally a hard water or iron bleedthrough problem is caused by salt bridging.  This is a phenomena where the salt in the brine tank dissolves then rehardens due to low use, weight or humidity.  In general we recommend, don’t put more than 3 bags of salt in your brine tank at a time.  AND, get in the habit of giving the old brine tank a shake when you’re down in the area, especially just before adding new salt.  You also can stir up the salt to prevent bridging – this can be done with a broom handle, but be very careful as with many softeners there is a plastic grid about 3 inches up from the bottom.
