The Invisible Costs of Water

The Hospitality Industry

A glass of water that does not taste like a swimming pool…

A toilet bowl that is not stained with iron…

Glassware that is not etched…

What do these things have in common?  They are all things that no one will ever mention about your facility.  Why is this?  Because water quality is taken for granted.  If you have great water quality in your restaurant or Inn, your customers will not comment. But believe me, just like a trashy parking lot or a messy rest room, they will remember the implied message of poor water quality.

A glass of water that tastes of chlorine, or iron, or copper, is not as refreshing as what water can be at its best.  A bar drink made with chlorine-filled ice cubes does a disservice to a fine quality scotch.  Toilet bowls with streaks of iron staining imply an unclean condition.  And glassware that is not crystal clear leaves an impression of a hasty washing process, even though the etching on the glasses may simply be due to hardness in the water.

And what about your staff?  If your facility is on a well with some iron content, how much time is spent cleaning up iron stains or following special procedures to make sure your linens do not become stained?  Are you spending extra money on special soaps to avoid hard water etching?  How often does your dishwasher or hot water system require maintenance?  These water quality related costs might not jump out at you when you analyze your financials, but they are real.

The common water quality issues of hardness, iron, manganese, low pH and bacteria can all be fixed in a cost effective manner.  Modern water treatment equipment can provide consistently great water quality with very low maintenance.  Whether the costs you are incurring are invisible and related to the image of your operation, or more tangible and relating to the systems within the building, they are real.  Do your business some benefit and obtain the best possible water quality. You won’t get any compliments, but they’ll keep coming back.
